Frazetta's Original Artwork

The “Kubla Khan” dossier by Frazetta (1975) “The Battlefield (Dead Warrior)” is simply one of the finest ink masterpieces ever drawn by him. Frank’s approach to art is so intuitive and natural that it takes him very little time to mentally grasp the essence of a scene. He doesn’t like to over-intellectualize the process. There are exceptions to this rule, however. Namely, the famous death scene from the 1977 Kubla Khan portfolio. Most of the panels were drawn in 1975, with the cover image added in 1977. Frazetta put a lot of thought into the composition of the scene. He wanted to maximize the emotional impact. Frazetta succeeded in creating a world-class illustration that highlights one of the key aspects of the human condition. The human soul shrinks and withers in a state of deep grief. The great warrior is on his knees with the death of his friend. His powerful arm is stretched with emotion. He is surrounded by carnage. Was it worth it? The viewer’s mind and soul are immediately immersed in the scene with compassion and empathy. This piece is not a comic book cover with grandiose gestures and false emotion; it is a serious work that shows the human condition in all its mystery and deep melancholy. For many years, this original proudly adorned a place of honor in Frazetta’s studio
