ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, Pablo Picasso was commissioned by the Spanish Republican government to create a large mural that would form part of the Spanish pavilion at the Universal Exposition in Paris. Two months before the event, the Basque town of Guernica was bombed by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy at the request of Spanish nationalists. This event shocked and inspired Picasso, who instantly abandoned his initial idea to start on a more powerful one. It was then that Picasso began to work passionately on his new project, sketching a series of preliminary drawings of Guernica in black and white, inspired by the colorless photo published in “The New York Times” of the tragic city. Tony Fernandez, advocating peace in a context where wars are still part of our contemporaneity, has reinterpreted this magnificent oil painting that today represents any episode of violence or vulnerability of civilians. The scene takes place in a room where, on the right, Donald Duck cries out to the sky with his arms raised in front of a burning house. A scared Goofy leans out the window holding a lamp, while Pluto approaches from the right in haste toward the center of the composition. A horse falls in agony and neighs in terror in the center of the room, while a bird flies away with a flower in its mouth. Clarabelle, the cow, represents the great bull in Picasso’s Guernica, and in the lower part of the composition, a mother cries as her chick is born from its egg. Mickey Mouse as one fallen soldier on the ground holds with one of his hands a pencil with a flower as a symbol of peace. Exclusively, and for his collection “Inspired By” Tony Fernandez creates this great piece of art starring The Disney Family in a large format with great impetus and dedication. —
