ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is an original preliminary cover of “L’etoile noire,” a comic book created by Juan Gimenez in collaboration with the writer Ricardo Barreiro. Initially published in France in 1981 by Glenat Publishing, this comic was later released by Comics USA in 1993 as the version to which this cover belongs. It was also published in Spain under the title “La estrella negra” in 1985 by Toutain Publishing.

In this brilliant comic book, Braxtor, a mysterious character with a hidden face, recruits a team of marginalized and individualistic characters in need of money. The goal: infiltrate a neutron star and obtain the technological secrets of alien ships stranded there. The group consists of Braxtor himself; Speed, a juvenile delinquent with a special ability to survive in extreme situations; Nadia, a young pilot; and Vran, a combat android with a unique ethical sense. Throughout their journey, they must confront terrifying warrior monks and extraterrestrial zombies, only to discover in the end that a traitor lurks among them.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Juan Gimenez was an Argentine comic book artist and writer, based in Spain, most recognized for his trademark intricate artwork, evoking mechanical designs. He was born in 1943 in the province of Mendoza, Argentina.He went on to produce other comics such as “Gangrène,” “Question of Time,” ” The Fourth Power”, “Leo Roa” and “The Saga of the Meta-barons”, among others. Gimenez was heavily influenced by the sci-fi and fantasy genres and his comics often dealt with themes of war and military paraphernalia. His work was recognized with several awards, including the Grand Prize for Best Album at the Angoulême International Comics Festival for “The Fourth Power” in 1990.
