ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is an original preliminary pencil drawing of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, and the main character of Homer’s epic poem “The Odyssey”. It was created by José María Martín Saurí, who collaborated with Francisco Perez Navarro to produce “The Odyssey” in comic book format.

First published in the 1980s, initially in the United States by Heavy Metal and later in Spain. In 2007, Norma Editorial released a commemorative version of this great work, marking its 25th anniversary. Today, in addition to being a literary classic, it has become an emblematic work in the world of comics. 

This excellent piece includes the artist’s seal on the right of the artwork.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

J.M. Martín Saurí is a renowned comic book artist. Born in Barcelona in 1949, his career began to flourish in 1973 when he illustrated an eight-page comic strip for “Pulgarcito” magazine (Bruguera Editorial). From 1975 onwards, he began collaborating with foreign publishers, initially focusing on romantic stories before transitioning to horror. Towards the end of the seventies, he published scattered works in Spanish magazines such as “Terror Gráfico”, “Blue Jeans”, “Más Madera!”, and “Rampa”. Throughout the 1980s, he collaborate with “Interviú” magazine and provided illustrations for biographies of “Alexander the Great” and “Shakespeare” for Bruguera. One of his most notable works is “The Odyssey” a mythological series written by Pérez Navarro that was initially published in “Heavy Metal” and later in “Comix Internacional”. Starting in 1994, he teamed up with Enrique Sánchez Abulí, releasing the erotic comic “La mariposa y la llama”. By the late 1990s, he increasingly engaged in collaborations with film and television production companies, as well as creating advertising commercials and animated cartoons.
