Tanino Liberatore

Tanino Liberatore is an acclaimed Italian comics author and illustrator recognized for his creation of the iconic character RanXerox. Born on April 12, 1953, in Quadri, Italy, Liberatore attended high school in Pescara, where he crossed paths with fellow comic artist Andrea Pazienza. After completing his architectural studies at the University of Rome, Liberatore delved into the world of design, crafting record covers for RCA from 1974 to 1978. In 1978, Liberatore’s path intersected with Stefano Tamburini, leading to his debut in Tamburini’s comics magazine, Cannibale. It was here that the legendary character RanXerox was born—a formidable cyborg-punk creation conceived by Tamburini. RanXerox quickly gained international recognition, spawning a series of standalone albums that were translated into multiple languages. Liberatore also played a pivotal role in the establishment of the groundbreaking magazine Frigidaire in 1980. Liberatore’s artistic prowess reached a global audience as his works were republished in renowned comics magazines, including Transfert, Métal Hurlant, A Suivre, L’Écho des savanes, and Chic. Notably, his illustration of RanXerox graced the cover of Frank Zappa’s album “The Man from Utopia,” further solidifying his artistic impact. In 1984, Liberatore lent his talents to design the album cover for “Beat Up,” the debut release by New York City-based ska band The Toasters. His artistic endeavors extended beyond comics as he created unique and exceptional artwork pieces for Robert “Bucket” Hingley, the frontman of The Toasters.
