ABOUT THE ARTWORK

For all lovers of the vampire genre, this page is a must-have from one of the essential comics for any enthusiast of the ninth art, namely Pepe González’s Vampirella. This page illustrates the protagonist and her adventures with the magician Pendragon.

The generous size of this panel and its watercolor shading make this work exceptional.

Vampirella enjoyed great success in the 1970s, combining high doses of eroticism with old-school terror, making this woman a true icon to this day. This contradictory femme fatale has been drawn by the great masters such as Frank Frazetta and Esteban Maroto, but discussing Pepe González’s era is discussing the artist who took the character of Vampirella to another level.

Pepe endowed the series with a well-defined graphic personality, with a stylized stroke, exceptional layout, and elaborate work on backgrounds and character expressions. Pepe González’s Vampirella, sensual, exotic, but also contradictory and enriched as a character, has garnered admiration from readers and professionals worldwide.

In each of the panels on this page, Pepe reiterates his ability to capture both the innocence and mischief of the protagonist, especially in a scene where she clings to her iconic bikini, reflecting the artist’s unmatched style in reproducing female anatomy in all its splendor.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Pepe Gonzalez was a renowned illustrator, comic book artist, and painter. He gained widespread recognition for his romantic stories during the 1960s and his notable contribution to the terror-erotic series, particularly for his work on Vampirella, which catered to the international market. In 1971, González began collaborating with Warren Publishing, thanks to his connections with S.I. (presumably a reference to an organization or individual). His partnership with Warren Publishing commenced with issue 12 in the same year, where he took on the role of the primary artist for the character Vampirella. González’s artwork for Vampirella garnered immediate acclaim, and his inaugural story earned him the Warren Publishing Award for Best Art in a Story in 1971. From issue 12 to issue 34, González consistently contributed his artistic skills to the Vampirella series, becoming the principal illustrator for the character. His work on issue 33 further solidified his talent and earned him another Warren Publishing Award in 1974 for Best Art on a Story. Throughout his career, Pepe González left an indelible mark on the world of illustration and comics, captivating audiences with his distinctive style and contributions to the Vampirella series.
