ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Vampirella with Tigers is a realistic artwork that pays homage to this fictional vampire superheroine created by Forrest J. Ackerman and comic book artist Trina Robbins in the 1970’s for Warren Publishing. In this version of the Vampirella character, Martin Rodriguez portrays her from behind on a patterned yellow background with two roaring tigers at her side. Using a monochromatic palette and a few small touches of color, including Vampirella’s outfit, her gold earrings, and the yellow background, the artist creates a fascinating contrast between the color and the absence of it. The young woman in the center of the composition withdraws into herself, concealing her face and her slender body while showing the viewer the large tattoo on her back. With the chiaroscuro technique, her body is perfectly modeled through meticulous brushwork. Every detail was painted with precision, with a silent line, creating an extraordinary version of the symbol of terror and heroism using oil on canvas. As a result, Martín Rodríguez transforms a cartoon character, Vampirella, into a living being.

Origin of Vampirella

Vampirella was an inhabitant of the planet Drakulon, a world where a vampiric race lived on blood and where blood flowed in rivers. Drakulon orbits twin suns that were causing droughts across the planet, marking certain doom for Vampirella and her race. The race of which Vampirella was born , umutun göt deliği the Vampiri, were able to transform themselves into bats at will, possessed superhuman physical attributes, sprout wings when required to fly, and drink blood. Soon the inhabitants of Drakulon started dying slowly due to the drying up of its blood. During those desperate times, a spaceship from Earth crashed on the planet. Vampirella, following her curious nature, went to investigate and was attacked. Retaliating, she discovered that the astronauts have blood in their veins. In order for her race to survive, she managed to pilot the ship back to Earth where her adventures began.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Martin Rodriguez Rio was influenced by his older brother’s interest in comic books and began drawing from a young age. At 12, he discovered Frank Frazetta’s works and became dedicated to drawing. Despite losing confidence in his talent during secondary school, he sold his first painting at 19, a reproduction of a Frazetta piece. He went on to study graphic design and worked in advertising illustration and design. In 2008, he fully committed to painting and gained international recognition as a horse painter. He also illustrated fantasy characters in Spain and formed a close friendship with sci-fi artist Juan Gimenez.
